Why is the British parliamentary debate style useful?

- Or Bilingual students at the Oxford debate’s Hungary Round

The British Parliamentary debate style consists of a certain methodology of leading an argument, which is based on the respect of the participants and their opinions and gives ground for exchanging arguments on complex problems. This knowledge is very useful in the field of studies, but it can also come in handy in settling arguments in the workplace as well as in one’s private life.

The Oxford Union Society’s annual Oxford Schools competition is one of the most outstanding British Parliamentary school-level debating competitions in the world, with the finals taking place in Oxford. The competition offers students aged 14 and above an excellent opportunity to develop their skills and confidence in public speaking, well-thought-out argumentation and analytical problem-solving.

Miss Anna’s Európa2000 High School students, Tarcsai Korinna, Herner Minka, Jelinek Éva and the Bilingual Alumni (students who have completed the elementary school program), Györke Dániel and Szabó Soma participated in the Oxford debate competition Hungary Round on Saturday, the 18th of January, 2020. While the majority of the students participating in the debate have clearly been learning how to debate for an extended period of time, the enthusiastic team of Bilingual students entered the competition after a single preparatory session. All of the students did remarkably well, in fact, the Bilingual Alumni team went on to the 2nd round. Based on the participating students’ words, debating is also an excellent practice for B2 and even the C1 level English language exam preparation.

Miss Anna will soon announce the Bilingual Debate Club at Európa 2000 High School for Bilingual and Bilingual Alumni high school students to attend, so that - if they feel like competing next year - they can do well not only here, but at the Oxford finals as well.

The opportunity for the 15 and under age group is also here, to test their skills and possibly even make it to the Cambridge competition!

(those who are not yet 16 years old by August 31, 2020)
