Crossroads Academy for Young Scholars – “Your Compass for New Horizons”
As a continuation of our Kindergarten/Primary School Programs, we have developed a brand new, innovative program called
with the following objectives:
- to provide an opportunity for our students to continue using and further developing their advanced English skills throughout their high school years, working toward a minimum level of C1 (“Advanced”)
- to ensure that at life’s many crossroads, our students are well prepared to meet the challenges of higher education as well as the “real world” job market;
- to focus on developing a core set of transferable skills (including critical thinking, creativity, and communication) that enable students to a) gain admission to and have a successful career at the college/university of their choice, whether in Hungary or abroad, and b) have strong potential for a successful professional career after finishing school.
- to provide personalized consultation, as a compass that helps guide our students through our increasingly globalized world.
Regardless of which high school your child attends, if you wish to continue reaping the benefits of the added value provided by Bilingual.hu’s programs — confident language use, advanced language skills, and cultural immersion – as well as gain essential skills for a competitive edge when facing life’s crossroads, our Crossroads Academy program is for you.
With courses taught by our most highly qualified English native teachers, the program follows a modular structure often used in English-speaking countries. The Head of Education for the Crossroads Academy program is Dr. Anna Bánhegyi.
The Crossroads Academy Program
Who is this program for?
Our program is for high school students (grades 9-12) looking for an English education with advanced skills development at this young age.
With its dual focus on advanced language development and key transferable skills, Crossroads Academy is especially well suited for the needs of students coming from Bilingual.hu’s Primary School Program.
How does the program work?
The Crossroads Academy program comprises of interdisciplinary course modules, designed to emulate a traditional college environment where students gain both depth and breadth across core disciplines, and engage with the material on several different levels. Students take one course module per semester.
At its heart, our program continues to rely on CLIL methodology (Content and Language Integrated Learning), in which language development is integrated into subject-specialized content within a native English-speaking environment, and which has been successfully implemented in the Bilingual.hu educational program for several years. The other key aspect is interdisciplinarity, with themes that cut across different areas of study and highlight their intersections, encouraging more complex ways of thinking about the world around us.
What kind of skills does Crossroads Academy focus on?
The Crossroads Academy program primarily aims at developing a set of key so-called transferable skills, which contribute to success in both further academic work and the professional work force, educating well-rounded and sharp individuals for the future. Whether the goal is to become an attorney, entrepreneur, engineer, or teacher, such skills as critical thinking, public speaking, and synthesizing information are fundamental to success.
Our program aims to foster:
– confident English language skills and familiarity with English-speaking cultures,
– critical thinking,
– independent research skills,
– creativity and the ability to “think outside the box,”
– written and oral communication skills (reasoning, style, delivery etc.),
– teamwork, cooperation, and community service,
– confident leadership and decision making skills.
What level of English does the program require?
Participation in the Crossroads Academy program is contingent on demonstrating sufficient knowledge of the English language (B2 level / Cambridge FCE). Consequently, students may be required to take a language test and/or participate in an oral interview prior to admission.
What does the Crossroads Academy program entail?
The building blocks of the Crossroads Academy program are interdisciplinary course modules exploring a main theme through a variety of disciplines (History, Literature, Music, Art, Sociology, Political Science, Economics, etc).
In grades 9-10, central themes may include “heroes & villains,” “sports,” “war,” or “money,” for instance. As an example, if the theme of the semester is “sports,” students will get a chance to engage with the basic methods and vocabulary of each field through aspects related to sports (e.g. the history of sports, sports as a theme in literature and arts, the language of sports commentary, the anthropology of an athlete, etc), using a variety of individual or team-based assignments of varying length.
In grades 11-12, there is a tighter focus on professional skills (resume-writing, corporate etiquette, etc), with such central themes as “leadership,” “the environment,” or “the future.”
What kind of coursework will you assign the students?
In a small group setting, students will engage with a variety of course materials. Primary and secondary sources will include short readings (fiction/nonfiction), movie clips, music, and images. Activities and assignments will include group discussions, written assignments, creative work, individual and group projects, presentations, experiments, drama and other games, formal debates, peer review, research days, and field trips or guest lecturers when possible.
How long is the program?
Course module length is one semester (16 weeks), with two modules per school year.
The upcoming semester will begin in September, 2017.
Courses meet for 4×45 minutes per week, held either as two weekday afternoon sessions or one Saturday morning session.
Where are the courses held?
Courses are held at the Bilingual.hu conference room (1035 Budapest, Miklós tér 1.)
How much does the program cost?
One course module is HUF 129,000. There are two modules per year.
